This novel should be read after volume 8, “The Collection: Haunted Nights”.
The story follows several important events in Illya’s life and how they all tangle together. It begins shortly after The Collection 4: Kolya’s Son, as Illya Kuryakin begins his career with U.N.C.L.E. New York. We see the first meeting of Napoleon and Illya, their first ill-fated assignment together, and their first mission. The novel then resumes their current storyline, following The Collection, Vol. 8: Haunted Nights, and draws together the events of several story threads, including the story “Pelyonki Affair” from The Collection, Vol. 3: Year One.
